I remember my teacher didn't exactly like my stories because they were a little too 'mature' and adult oriented for her tastes and for high school literature. I did however manage to write a poem that won a local literary context and my poem ended up getting published in a poetry anthology book. I was pretty proud of myself, but that was the end of my writing... for then at least Like everyone I ended up getting side tracked with life. I graduated high school and within a month I was in boot camp. Then came marriage, kids, and everything else that makes a person tell themselves that they have to have a real job that pays the bills, and for most of us we tell ourselves writing is just a fantasy and won't pay the bills. Soul Mates was a story idea I had been playing around with for some time but never really got serious about it, that is until the first HBO Project Green Light came out. Fresh out of the military and wanting something more out of life, my best friend and I sat down and crafted a screen play for Project Green Light based on my story Soul Mates and entered the contest. Needless to say we didn't win. I did learn a lot though. Part of the contest was that the screenplay that would be made into a movie had to be low budget, meaning few sets and characters. This put a lot of restrictions on the story and a lot of elements I originally envisioned in the story had to be cut. The result was unsatisfying. After years of it sitting there waiting and begging for some attention I finally got the writing bug again. It took more than twenty years, working myself into heart failure and a really rough open heart surgery, but I got the bug again. I think, no I know the open heart surgery is what changed me. They lost me during the operation and I had a very rough recovery that took years to get back to some assemblance of feeling normal again and the whole experience gave me a different perspective on life.
